Specifying style for subitems in the ASP Menu StaticItemTemplate

I have a navigation control (using the Menu control) that I want to only
display static items (nothing dynamic). My rendering looks something like
this:

<ul>
<li><a href="#"><div class="pad">Level 1</div></a></li>
<li><a href="#"><div class="pad">Level 1</div></a></li>
<li class="sub"><a href="#"><div class="pad-sub">Level 2</div></a></li>
<li><a href="#"><div class="pad">Level 1</div></a></li>
</ul>

So I can use the StaticItemTemplate with no problem to create the level 1
menu items, but the challenge comes when I have subitems... how do you
determin if a navigation node is a child to an existing one?
