Syntax Highlighting (Swing) Text Panel

What is the recommended method for creating an editable syntax
highlighting text panel in Swing? I'm currently using a combination
of JTextPane, DefaultStyledDocument, etc. but have found it a bit
fiddly.

Are there any other options?
