calculate the number of seconds since January 1, 1900 00:00 UTC.
Anybody got any ideas on how to do this?

What about this.

no_of_millis_1970 + ((70*365+no_leap_year*1)*24*60*60*1000)

Or lookup java.util.GregorianCalendar

Find out the timestamp of Jan 1 1900 relative to Jan 1 1970. It will
be a negative number. Subtract it from your Jan 1 1970 relative
timestamp of your date of interest.
