Trouble Publishing .NET App

So I'm trying to publish a site for a client on their new dedicated
server. I published a previous .NET app (with some trouble but
eventually got it working) on their old machine. This is a similiar
..NET app. It's a fresh machine w/ SQL Server, the service packs and
ASP.NET 2.0.

For some reason when I set up the website in IIS, I get weird results
when trying to browse the pages.

..html - can browse to this fine
..aspx - says page cannot be found
..asp - says page cannot be found

I thought this was because ASP.NET wasn't configured right but we just
put in 2.0 so I'm not sure what the heck is going on.

has anyone seen this problem before?

Thanks.

What are the "weird results"? I would make sure that your asp.net is
properly registered with IIS. Also, make sure that the extensions are
configured correctly in IIS.

The weird results are as mentioned above.

HTML pages load fine. But browsing to ASP or ASPX files from the IIS
console, I get a page not found. Yep, all the server settings are in
place too.

Are you, by any chance, running Windows Server 2003 ?

If so, you have to explicitly allow running both asp and aspx pages.

Open the IIS Manager and browse on the left to "web Service extensions".

Then, go to the right-hand pane, select asp and click the "Allow"button.
Do the same for ASP.NET.

Hi there. Thank you that did the trick. No I am able to find the
pages. When I browse to my default website, I get this error now:

Server Application Unavailable
The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is
currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web
browser to retry your request.

Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this
specific request failure can be found in the application event log of
the web server. Please review this log entry to discover what caused
this error to occur.

I have turned on/off custom messages but I still get the same message.
Any ideas on this?

Thanks.

Glad that worked.

You probably have both .Net 1.1 and .Net 2.0 applications
running in the same Application Pool.

Make sure that, at the very least, you place all
1.1 apps and 2.0 apps into separate application pools.

If you want to give a particular application a higher isolation, for protection,
you may do that, too, by assigning it to its own App Pool.

Use the IIS Manager to create as many App Pools as you need and assign your apps
to the correct App Pool for the version of the .Net Framework they're running under.

Then, run iisreset from the "Run" command in the Start Menu.

You should be good to go after you do that.

Fixed it finally!

Found a post with this info:

I had to give the IIS_WPG group (which contains ASPNET,
IWAM_MachineName, LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE & SYSTEM) read/write
access to our web root directory & everything beneath.
