What is the best route to take when trying to implement an updating function
to a program? For example, an anti-virus program that checks everyday and
let's the user know an update is available or updates automaticlly.

    Thanks

Note that the answer is highly platform/environment specific.
In addition, nothing about the necessarily outside communication can
be written in standard C. Thus, your request is off-topic round here.

Maybe a newsgroup dedicated to programming on your platform can
point you to well-known standard techniques or libraries to support
    you.

    Cheers
