Unclickable Bagrounds

Hi all,
I am using a simple overlay div(100 x 100),
When the user clicks on a link on the background the div is displayed
& when he clicks on close link inside div,
the div gets closed.

I am using a simple javascript for it .

But the problem is when the div is displayed (when it is on the top) ,
the other links & buttons at the background are still active , i don't
wan't them to be active,
i want the background should be unclickable.

Any idea how can i do this..?? can i do this using HTML / CSS ..??
Any help..??
