updatecommand not firing on DataGrid

I have a datagrid that uses an update.
thew grid is in a control.
It works fine when I place the control with the grid in an empty page for a
container.
However when I put it into a telerk rad control tab
it no longer fires the update command.
Wondering if the rad controls don't do anything behind the scenes
