using XSLT to do "medium-heavy" data transformations with lookup tables

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone out there has this knowledge...is it possible for
XSLT to peform SQL logic against incoming data, ie join it to existing
table structures to acquire missing fields, just an ETL tool would do
? Or, does it need to call custom java code to perform these kinds of
operations. And, is this, or is this not, recommended ?
