velocity a good choice?

We are looking at writing a generic messaging framework to handle our
fax/email/sms requirements. We will be utilising an ESB architecture
and probably use email gateways to handle fax/sms. When it comes to
the actual templating of the messages is velocity the current standard
or is there something else I should consider?

I've not had any complaints about Velocity, but I've heard people
recommending FreeMarker in preference. I haven't used FreeMarker but I
did see this comparison the other day that seems to favour it over
Velocity:

Yes, though actually, that article presents a rather superficial
comparison of the two tools. I wrote a blog entry on the freemarker
group blog that addresses the velocity-freemarker comparison in
greater depth.
