Virtual dedicated hosting?

I currently have a dedicated server from EV1Servers.net. I've been
getting annoyed with the really old stuff on the server (Redhat 7.2,
Python 1.5...), and up2date is broken so I can't even upgrade it. (The
cost is nothing to sneeze at, either.) I'm hosting a few people, around
six, so I can't switch to shared. Would virtual dedicated work for me?
Has anyone here tried it here?

Why can't you use a reseller, such as those from
http://www.dot5hosting.com/, or even Affordable Host?
