VS2005 wants FrontPage extensions, but theyre installed!?

G

Guest

Hi guys

I'm trying to migrate to VS2005... I've managed to do that, but realised I'd
opened my web projects as file projects, and I'm getting the error about
network BIOS command limit.

Anyway, I decided to have a go at loading them as web projects from our
Win2k3 server. It gets so far and then says "The web server does not appear
to have FrontPage server extensions installed".

So, I installed the FP2002 extensions from the Windows 2003 CD, but I'm
still getting the error.

How can I get this working!?

Cheers

The network BIOS limit error occurs when you're trying to use VS 2005 from a
network drive using the file system project approach. Two solutions to
this:

1) Install FrontPage Server Extensions to the remote machine and then access
the website through the Remote Site option under VS 2005.

2) Copy your website directory to your local hard drive and use the file
system approach again from your local machine.

Cheers mate, that confirms my understanding of the solutions.

I tried to use the Remote Site option, and this is where I've come unstuck.
I've installed FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from the Win2k3 installation
CD, but when I try and access the remote site, VS is telling me that the
server does not have FrontPage Server Extensions.

Do I need a newer version of FPSE for 2005?!

FPSE 2002 is the latest version.

Did you set up the website for FPSE through IIS? If not, go to the website
in IIS and then select All Tasks and your options for FPSE should be there.

Hi Dan,

As Christopher mentioend, you can check the FPSE(2002) in the IIS manager
(inetmgr.exe). Are your server using IIS6? If so, you should be able to
see the "Extend server extension 2002" menu item in the "All Task" menu for
a WebSite node.... and click it to extend the website.... After that ,
you should be able to see some other menu items under "All task" menu of
that site , e.g: "remove server extension 2002..."

After you successfully installed FPSE and configured the certain website
that you want to let remove client access through FPSE... You can launch
VS 2005 on the remove client (dev machine) and try using the "Remote Site"
to open that site you configured .....

Hope helps. Thanks,

Steven Cheng

Hi guys

Just wanted to let you all know that I got it working after much faffing
about :)

Once I'd found the "Extend Server Extensions" menu item I was well on my
way, so that's cool - thank you all for your help.

Hi Steven

Yeah, I sort of gathered that. I'm trying to get my system to use mapped
drives (rather than using remote web) but im getting "network bios command

Because IIS is running on my 2k3 server, I can't see how I could use local
development for my scenario?!

Therefore, may I ask if you would be kind enough to contact me via email so
we can discuss this further?! (dan at musoswire dot com)

Be really appreciated!

Thanks for your response Dan,

Actually using network file share is also not quite convenient since we
have to ensure the remote server has properly set the share folder's access
permission. What I mean is since VS 2005 asp.net 2.0 can be developed
through filesystem project independent of IIS server, you can copy the
project(website application) to your local development machine in a normal
file system folder, and develop and debug it through .net's test
webserver... After you finished, you can use publish website or copy
website to deploy it to remote IIS server....

Thanks,

Steven Cheng

Hi Steven,

Ah ok, I misunderstood what you were saying...

One thing though, if I did do that, how would that affect my projects use of
Active Directory!? This is an intranet project with Integrated Windows
Authentication and lots of AD role checks... how would that work if you were
developing locally?!

What I'm trying to avoid is having to compile then publish every time I make
a change :)

Cheers

Thanks for your response Dan,

Actually using network file share is also not quite convenient since we
have to ensure the remote server has properly set the share folder's access
permission. What I mean is since VS 2005 asp.net 2.0 can be developed
through filesystem project independent of IIS server, you can copy the
project(website application) to your local development machine in a normal
file system folder, and develop and debug it through .net's test
webserver... After you finished, you can use publish website or copy
website to deploy it to remote IIS server....

Thanks,

Steven Cheng

| Hi Steven

| Yeah, I sort of gathered that. I'm trying to get my system to use mapped

Thanks for your response Dan,

So that's your case, if so I think it's better to develop the app in IIS
environment. Is it possible that you have a local IIS installed on your dev
box(XP)? XP IIS5 can only support single Site , but I think that's enough
for developing. Also, the buildin test webserver support NTLM
authentication ....

Thanks,

Steven Cheng
