Webapp usage statistics (analyzing log output?)

Wendy S

I'm trying to figure out how to get usage statistics for my webapps. I want
to know how many users I have, and what they're doing. For example, one of
my web applications is a front-end for accounting reports. I want to come
up with the number of users per day, and how many of each type of report
they requested.

I have a couple of ideas (analyzing the log output, or recording each
request in a database,) but very little idea of how to get started. (If it
matters, these are Struts webapps running in Tomcat, and I'm using Log4j.)

Thanks for any ideas, Google mostly turned up things like Analog which work
on 'standard' log formats.

If it is a one time download the Webtrends.

Last I looked the license is good for 12 days.

If you like it buy it. If you are short on bucks
purchase one of the old versions on ebay. They
work fine.
