Thanks for your very elaborate and very informative answer. I'm not
actually assigning the TextBox value to itself in my code, I was just
trying to expose the problem in the simplest possible form, in what
has come to be known as "The Jon Skeet Specifications 2.0" .
The value is "hand-bound" from a db field, and written back in the db
after the round trip, so I do have to assign it to a TextBox first,
and I do have to read the value back after a PostBack. But I will
definitely try fiddling with ViewState and I'll give you an update on
my findings.
