What does it do?

    $('demosMenu')

    where demosMenu is an id of one of the elements. Is $('') equivalent to
    document getElementById()

    Yes it is equivalent to document.getElementById() if you are using the
    Prototype JavaScript library. It is not recommended that you use this
    library
