Microsoft attempted to *copy* Netscape's Javascript by reverse
engineering it (and as you'd expect getting it wrong in places). They
named it Jscript because Netscape had trademarked the name Javascript.

But they should've called it Borneoscript to reduce the confusion.

They named it Jscript because Netscape had trademarked the name
Javascript.

While we are being pedantic, it is actually Sun who is holding the
trademark on "JavaScript". See, e.g., the trademark notice here
