ldap not connecting

Hi to all.
I need to use directory services on asp.net project.
I tried to connect from the asp page using ldap://serverIp,
and also providing user name and password of the administrator,
but it did not work.
So i tried to connecting on the domain controller, typing
ldap://localhost in the browser.
A search tool popped up, but when trying to search i got
an error saying that the service is not connected.
Any ideas?
