changing the value of a textarea

Hi All!

Just wondering if someone would be able to help me with this problem.

I am using a jsp page that will generate a user defined number of textareas
on a page. I wish to have a table of controls on the left of each textarea
that can be used to automatically insert text. But as I do not know how
many textareas there will be I want to be able to use a single javascript
function for each table of controls that takes in (I imagine) a pointer to
the text area that is to be updated.

Is there any way that I can do this?
