druby and shared memory!!

I need to know....what druby does in case of local connection? does
data still flows through sockets? if yes...then i wouldn't want to use
druby and would rather write my own server and client using using
shared memory!!!

but i need some pointes on shared memory using ruby!!!

Is it worth the overhead, i.e. does the speed gain pay off for the efforts
you have to invest to get this going?
