error client does not have permission to send email to this server

Hi, just wondering what might cause this error? I have a windows application
running on a server that sends out emails via a email server. I am using the
system.Net.Mail.SmtpClient object with the windows application. Does the
application gain access to the email server using the (from email address) or
the credentials of the user that is running the windows application to gain
access to the email server?
