How can a button both call javascript and asp.net?

Suppose I want a button to fire a custom javascript routine, and if
the routine returns 'true', to then fire an asp.net routine. Can this
be done? Would I use a 'onclick' property to run javascript, and a
'handles' procedure in the asp page itself?
