How Could I Create a Process Monitor

I'm looking for links/tutorials and any hints for the following... A process
monitor that would show which record was being processed, the step and
outcome.

The above text box (Ajax control?) would basically be periodically
refreshing itself, checking the ActionTable for this information.

I've created a test table to store the start & stop commands in an
ActionTable, allong with the stats & status. Before an sProc/trigger moves
to the next stage it checks this table, for bStart, bContinue, bPause, bStop
values and acts accordingly.

I haven't done an Ajax project and I suppose this would be a good candidate.
I have a fair amount of experience with VS 3 & 5 and I have VS 8 Pro in the
box, I assume that VS 8 would be the best choice.
