Knowing a language is a bit like knowing how to use a pencil. it is an
essential skill, but on its own it will on equip you for a fairly menial
job. Knowing how to use a pencil and knowing something about geometry and
buildings may land you a job in an architects. Similarly you can get a
research job with us if you know C and biochemistry, you can get a much
better paid job as an IT consultant if you know C and know how to talk to
business customers to get their requirements, you can get a games
programming job if you know C and like playing games and are stupid enough
to work for vague promises of massive bonuses rather than actual money, and
so on.

One programming language is never enough.

I've been in my current job for 18 months and so far I have used
the following languages on the job; Actionscript, C, C++, Ocaml,
Python, bash shell and Verilog.

All of the above was writing new code. I also maintained some code
written by someone else in C#.

C is a language that is good for some tasks. The corollary is
that there are also tasks for which C is not the ideal language.
