That would be way too intelligent to be called a numpty.Picked it up when I lived in England but I think it's Scotts. Basic
translation: - "I'm probably going to look like a complete knob-head
asking this, but . . . "

definitions 2 and 3 are closer to how I usually hear it being used, but
it may have mutated on its way south. In glider pilot circles its mutated
still further: a numpty is somebody who is considered a danger to
themselves and anybody else in the immediate vicinity due to sheer
ignorance and/or bone-headed stupidity. I wouldn't fly with a numpty or
willingly share a thermal with them.
