rmi for remote database transactions. a design pattern or pointer?

hi, I'm a newbie to RMI and need some advice.

I'm trying to replace a cludgy jsp / bean interface to a postgres
database that allows a client machine to http post text files of data
to a postgres database (it needs to be transaction controlled), with a
RMI interface for the database access classes directly. What I don't
understand, is how I can manage the security(login) / transaction
control aspect via RMI

Is there a web example or design pattern you could point me to? the
alternative is me building this thing from scratch including all the
mistakes I'm bound to make in design.

I'm sure this thing is well trodden, and I *have* looked, but I just
can't see the wood for the trees in all the web material.

Really, any advice even a book suggestion would be appreciated.

thanks guys.
