Single RJ-45 with two NICs?

Hello,

When you look at a cat5e cable, it seems to have 4 pairs of twisted
cable inside. Does that mean that a 100 Mbps NIC will use all 4 pairs of
twisted cable or only 2-pairs? If it's only 2, then can I use the other
2 pairs to run another NIC? If so, how?

Thanks.

This newsgroup discusses the C programming language. We can't help
you with questions about network cables. Perhaps another newsgroup
could, but I don't know which one.

Yes it does!

I believe that only 2 are used at 100Mbps. Gigabit ethernet uses all 4.

I think originally there were 4 pairs so that both phone and data could
run over the same cable (4 data wires, 4 voice wires). It does make
sense to use all 8 for data.
If it's only 2, then can I use the other 2 pairs to run another NIC?
If so, how?

Maybe if you modify your NIC and write a suitable driver for it... Why
on earth would you want to? Just get a splitter.
