Can't we do something about the spam?

You could put gmail on the blacklist (as many already do as a last solution)
or teach your Thunderbird to recognise it. There are many pertinent
keywords in the subject that should make it quite easy.

On an individual basis, create filters. I've had good luck with a set
of keywords. I see very little.

On a community basis, you can report it to Google Groups, which is the
vector for almost all spam these days. Unforunately, they seem to be
unreponsive.

I think it's important to make a distinction between "gmail" and
"Google Groups" here. What you want to blacklist is not a return
address @gmail.com (most spammers won't supply one, some legitimate
posters do), but a message-id header matching the regular expression
<.*\\.googlegroups\\.com>. That eliminates 99.9% of the spam, and
quite a few annoying noobs as well.

Google seem to believe that having bought DejaNews, they now own
usenet. Apparently they don't take good care of their possessions,
either.

And quite a few other, legitimate contributors, especially those from
some of the Asian countries. A BAD solution.

A set of keyword filters will take care of the majority of the problem,
without the collateral damage of either a gmail or GG domain block.

You're right, I got that thought the day after I wrote this.
