Trouble with links

Tony Cooper

First, I admit to using only html 4.01 and not to being interested -
at this time - to progressing to CSS. If that doesn't bother you, see
if you figure out my problem.

I wrote two pages, put them in a folder, and ftp'd them up to my host.
What I would like to accomplish for the viewer to click a link at the
bottom of the first page and jump to the second page. Then, the
viewer could click a link at the bottom of the send page and jump back
to the first page.

First page contains:

<a href="links2.html">Go to Page 2</a>

Second page contains:

<a href="links.html">Back to Page 1</a>

Clicking the link on the first page does send the viewer to page 2.
Clicking the link on page 2 sends the viewer to my host's "Page Not
Found"

When I look at the source on page 2, the link is

a href="links.html/">Back to Page 1</a>

I've re-ftp'd, but each time that extra forward slash is inserted even
though it's not in what I ftp up. It seems that this forward slash is
the problem.

Where's my error or what's my solution?

BTW, this is a test page. The actual page will have links to more
than two pages, but if I can't get it to work with two pages....

I know it sounds silly but it's usually something small - try clearing your
browser cache and re-load the page. For example it might invole pressing
shift-F5 (depending on browser used).

I doubt it. If the OP is getting the source code to appear
"almost right". If it was a browser cache problem it would be
totally unlike the intended.

The OP should ftp something up and give a url and/or make an
exact copy of source and post it here so we can see and maybe
find a missing " or and unwanted character to explain it or to
simply assess and enjoy and wonder at the sheerness of the
mystery...

How do you figure that? He could have a pre-version "stuck" in the
cache, no?

Yeah, a url would've helped.

OK, Boji, I might be wrong on this! I now can't recall what
clear but obviously unobvious reason I said this? Indeed there
could be an earlier "stuck" version. But did the OP ever have a
forward slash or is this added by the server somehow because of
some other small user error input?

To the OP: I clear cache in a variety of ways. One way is to go
to an unrelated page, then clear it in preferences or options
and then to try the original page again.

Also make a new doc, cut and paste nearly everything from old to
new but actually retype the bit and around it that is giving
trouble. Then ftp new html doc up to server...

It could've been a typo, but I really don't know. Servers can do some
strange things...

(...'Specially if you don't tip 'em! Hah, hah, hah. -Er, okay, I'll go
back in my hole now.)

Whatever the cause, it has been corrected. Shortly after making the
attempts, and posting the question here, the internet went "out" in at
least this area. I'm an Earthlink subscriber by cable through
Brighthouse. The problem was so bad that Brighthouse's phones were
bypassed to one of those "All circuits are busy" messages.

Service came back this morning, and I had to re-set my connection. In
the meantime, I took down the version previously ftp'd up. I re-ftp'd
the page up today and the new version works fine.

Thanks for the attempts to help. "Wonky internet" was not among the
solutions, but who'dathought?
