Membership.GetUser() returns null

Membership.GetUser() returns null for anonymous users after migrating from
Beta 2 to ASP.NET 2.0. Does anyone have an idea why this happens??

order.UserID = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey;
throws a NullReferenceException

I have set anonymousIdentification enabled/true.

Would greatly appreciate any hints as I've spent days and days to solve this
problem.
