Repeat gif

Graham

A small but niggly html question, I can make my own gifs, no problem and in
the animator set the gif to repeat endlessly, but I have 'borrowed' a gif,
this one ......
http://members.chello.nl/j.hutson/gif.htm
to use on my own home page. But it only repeats 5 times, which mans by the
time my clients have scrolled down to it, it is finished.
Question, how do I get an already made GIF to repeat in html? I have tried
<img repeat src= "live.gif"> Don't work.
I even tried making a new endless gif with "live.gif" as the frame, didn't
work ;-)
Any ideas?

That's not an animated gif over here.

repeat? You can't just make up HTML attributes and expect browsers to
understand them :)
I even tried making a new endless gif with "live.gif" as the frame, didn't
work ;-)

Er, what?

Have you considered that it repeats only 5 times cos that's 3 times more
than would already be annoying. An looping repeat would be even more
annoying.

I know but it was worth a guess ;-)
Er, what?

I opened a gif animator and stuck "live.gif" in the first frame, hoping when
saved it to repeat every 5 seconds the new gif would repeat the original. I
guess that explanation is as clear as mud. ;-)
Predictably it didn't work. Well you don't know till you try. LOL

I did knick it from the BBC website and the BBC do like their repeats, so
you could be right.;-)

What you need is a gif animation tool.
Several online tools available.

To see how it works, use "irfanview", cut out each picture and see how
many they use.

Since the motion stops, I would think they use some scripting to do
this as native animated gif's just keep on ticking.

Open the file in your GIF animator and change the 'iterations' in the
'control' for the animated portion of the image.

Unless you set them not to. And that's not scripting.

In image software that supports animated gifs you can change this
easily. Here is an animated gif that illustrates the *sort of*
change you need to make. If you want to see it again, you will
need to refresh your browser. This is because it is not made to
loop at all. It is not made to loop because it is a demo of what
to do to make something loop forever. If it looped forever, you
might be confused about it:

<http://netweaver.com.au/alt/animations/change_to_forever.gif>

And one more thing - are you still reading? - an animated gif
that loops forever can be the best of things on only the rarest
occasions. Mostly it is a great annoyance. A survey was taken a
couple of years back and beings were invited to choose between
being lectured to at length by me on any subject that I fancy or
watching a mindless infinitely looping animation. Even the dog I
walk chose the animation.

I have one of my browsers ready set to not let such things loop.
So here is a point, some people can set their browsers to stop
such looping. This means that as with javascript and other things
not guaranteed to be active on all browsers, do not rely on the
looping for anything important.

What could looping be important for? I hear you ask. Well, let me
see now...

How about a site that gives a big prize for guessing the number
of loops that happen in one animation compared to the number in
another next to it? A poor person, who is really good at loop
counts but who is bad at browser configs, if the poor schmuck was
using my iCab, he would not stand a chance and this would be very
unfair. Anybody still reading this?

Things get worse when you're in Glendale California (US). Yesterday,
when I took Spane to school, waiting for the light to change, my eyes
where captured by a taxi cab with an animated top showing adverts for
Indian gaming and other stuff.

In June, California drivers are going to be ticketed if they are caught
using a regular cell phone while driving. That's a good thing, and I
think they ought to be ticketed for various other things, putting on
makeup, reading, etc.

So, now here comes a taxi with a big animated sign on the top of the
vehicle - talk about distracting. I wonder how long it's going to take
Glendale City Counsel to outlaw that - hopefully before someone gets
hurt.
