Viewstate restore for dynamic control in datagrid

I'm trying to (dynamically) add a dropdownlist to the footer of a
datagrid, and get to this to restore from viewstate. Can anyone help?

I'm creating the control in Page_Init, but obviously I can only 'join'
it to anything in Datagrid_onitemcreate.

Help!!
