404 error header?

I have a web site with a custom 404 error page. I noticed something odd the
other day; instead of returning 404 in the HTTP headers, it returns 200 OK.

Is there a situation where this would be a problem? Or should I just ignore
it?

Yes. Search engines, for example, or automated link checkers.

I guess I'll have to get after my web host.
Do you know if it's possible to do this in IIS 6?
