5.8.8 build fails - no Makefile

This is on a PC running Knoppix 3.7.

I ran "Configure" interactively and did not see any error messages.
According to the directions in the "INSTALL" file, the next step is
"make". I'm in the "UU" directory, which has no Makefile. The closest
thing to it is "Makefile.SH" in the "perl-5.8.8" directory, which fails
because it can't find "config.sh", which is in the "UU" directory.

What UU directory? I don't think a normal distribution has one,
but if it does, what are you doing there?

The normal sequence is

cd perl-5.8.8
./Configure -des
make
make test
make install
