CAn i get multiple instances of java installed for different apps ?

For example i have Cisco works and another app.

CiscoWorks uses 1.4.2_8 or 10

My other app spectrum oneclick uses requires J 1.5

IS there a way to configure each app to use a different version of
java ?

Yes. Web start can handle JRE versioning.

For locally-started apps one could also use

JAVA_HOME=/foo/alternate/path/to/javaroot $JAVA_HOME/bin/java ...

or the equivalent, e.g.,
/foo/alternate/path/to/javaroot/bin/java ...
