Who? When? Name a case. Give us the domain name involved.

Me. Approximately 4 yrs ago. It happened with 2 names simultaneously.
Whether or not one knows the domain names in question, actually is
irrelevant. The names were poached during the course of a conference
call where we were all querying the whois db.

Or are you, like most people here...

I do not have enough time to cover that with which you
are not familiar.

...So far what you have
said amounts to 'vague waving around of hands'.

At least no one can claim that you are vague. With that stream of ad
hominem, it is abundantly clear what a jackass you really are. Go back
to chiding newbies for cross posting, at least it is a task you are up to.

Good. The domain names themselves are hardly irrelevant though.
If they were for/related to something that had just become big
on the net, they may well have been the subject of a lot of
interest by disparate parties.

Did that ever occur to you?

Since you seem to refuse (seemingly) to name them, no
further analysis of your claims is possible, and we
are back to 'vague waving aobut of hands'

And the odds are, that at some point throughout the history,
of domain naming, someone put down the money on a domain name
that was under discussion somewhere else in the world, purely
because they had also been thinking of reserving that name,
and decided to do so.

Rah, rah! Feel better now? ;-)

The names were not even words in the english language (nor french, but I
can't speculate beyond that). I can only wish that they were 'big',
since they were the names of two consulting projects which we were
morphing into products. One name still languishes with a new speculator,
while the other was picked up by a bonafide company about a year after
it was stolen from me. If these names were so hotly contested why did it
take so long for only one of them to get used?

I have divested all interests in the company associated with these
events, so I have no incentive and no authority to do anything about the
problem. The split was not amicable, and I prefer to keep the other
party out of the discussion (they have .ca versions registered right
now). Insofar and hand waving is concerned, reread your own words and
describe how a sample of five is proof of anything. The fact that you
decree something as gospel has no bearing on reality whatsoever.

because they had also been thinking of reserving that name,
and decided to do so.

And the odds of that happening during a _specific_ 1 hour period, for
these non-english names, poached by a subsidiary of register.com is near
zero.

Rah, rah! Feel better now? ;-)

Not particularly, no.
