Controls reference inside DataList's EditTemplate

At which event, the earliest I can reference to the controls in my EditTemplate inside a DataList ? I have tried the OnEditCommand
but unable to see the controls in the EditTemplate ?

Also, I would like to know how to change the mode of my Datalist from a custom control button outside of the DataList ?
