Are these part of the C++ standard? I am using a fairly new compiler (Sun
Forte 7 on solaris) and these don't appear to be included in the standard
included path (while map, string, vector, etc. are...)

Not yet. Try,
#include <ext/hash_map>
I believe that's how the SGI implementation is set up.
