help needed with server-side/client-side issue

My webform displays the results of a search -- titles of articles
that discuss a topic. The titles are added dynamically to the
page. When the user clicks one of the titles, I need to do two
things:

1) write a record to the database
2) launch the selected article in a popup window

Is it possible to do this, without a helper page, by using one of
the webcontrols? Server-side code would write to the database, and
an attached a client-side script, which would invoke window.open()

Is it possible for a webcontrol to launch both server-side and
client-side code, one after the other?
