hot link protection and css background images

I'm new to css but so far I've done ok, except that if I enable hot link
protection on my site, the background images I use in the styles dissapear.
I'm sure I have hot linking set up correctly because any regular images on
the site are still displayed fine. Has anyone had this happen to them?

The links in your stylesheet are seen as hotlinks. Make releative paths of
them.

Hotlink protection will never get you into a search engine.
