Jvm memory access

On a 64bit platform is the jvm memory space addressed in a "flat" type
memory segment or does it operate in such a fashion that the space above and
beyond the 3.6gigs (or whatever it is on your platform) is handled
differently? Is it effecient to have a server with 16-32 gigs of memory or
find a way to cluster 4 machines with less memory? (memory intensive app)

Specifically on say a Sun or AMD Opteron platform.

thanks!

I think all the 64-bit JVMs have 64-bit flat hardware addressing
backing them, no?
