Manipulating MIDI

Hello,

I am in need of a module using which I could
manipulate musical information from MIDI files. What I
need is some module that could extract the frequency
components of the various instruments in the musical
piece. Any suggestions?

If there isn't such a module, could you suggest a
similar module in C/C++, so that I could then write
bindings for it in Python.
