Maxtix starter Kit installation - failure on test connect to MSDE

I have attempted to install two Matrix starter kits. Both failed when
the test database connect was unsucessful. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled MSDE between the attemps.

MSDE version 8.00761

I'd appreciate step by step instructions to overcome this glich.
