Web Services rendering images using Apache Axis

I have an axis web service that will render PNG images in Base-64
encoded format. I am using Apache Axis to do this. What I find is that
the it takes longer time to serialize the Base-64 encoded images and
to send back the images to the axis client. The network across which
the images are sent back does not seem to be a problem. Images are
encoded as byte array objects in the SOAP XML and sent back. Is there
any way of reducing this time to send back the encoded images? Or do I
need to use any other datatype instead of byte array?
