JRE 5.0 Update 4 lurking in background?

Recently installed this JRE (last time I updated the JRE was a while back
with 1.4). I came home to find my computer very, very sluggish. A quick
check revealed javaw.exe to be sitting on nearly 200mb of memory and
intermittent bursts of cpu usage. No Java apps or plug-ins were running. I
killed the process and immediately my computer was back up to speed. Is this
a new "feature" of the JRE, to stay resident? I should mention that between
installing/loading the JRE and finding my computer catatonic, it was left on
for a period of about 4 days... improper termination of a Java program and
memory leak perhaps? Anyone else experience something like this?

no, but java.exe has a DLL that does. Sounds like you wrote some
program that pulled a Cheshire cat. It disposed all visible gui stuff
but kept running.
