Malware as shown in popular culture fiction

On a police investigation show, some scientists discovered a sound file, and were playing it. Their computer started deleting their files relating to a specific case. One shouted "That's malware!" and ripped out the cables.

Am I out of touch, or is that completely nuts?

The only logical way I can see that working, is the person who made the sound file is the same person who wrote the media player software.
