memory drawings in C [OT]

Is it better to draw a memory drawing to go through a C program which
involves lot of
pointers and data struct. I tried but I am getting stuck when things are
getting complicated.
I tried with Minix Os source code to *visulize* the flow of the variable
but it was too complicated.
Am I wasting my time in this way of going through a C program or is it a
good practice.
