ABSTRACT
--------
The Web as we have known it since (Sir) Tim Berners-Lee let his creation
loose on the world, has been document and interactive-end-user centric.
For the most part, this has worked quite well.
However as most of us that work in the IT business know, most software
in a corporation doesn't require interactive use. Most of of the
software in an IT shop is machine-to-machine based; the vast majority
is simply the interfaces or "glue" among subsystems.
Web Services is an extension of this concept. Web Services represent
similar machine-to-machine interfaces but over the Web (which implies HTTP).
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) simply describes Web Services as the
programmatic interfaces for application-to-application communication.
However the W3C has *only* defined standards for grandiose web services
using SOAP, WSDL and UDDI, all XML-based. And enterprises are starting
to move in this direction even for inside-the-firewall purposes.
Complaints are already forming against XML-based web services for
enterprise usages. They're heavyweight, verbose, lack true semantics,
require extra network bandwidth, need improved firewall security, etc,
etc. There's even talk of (poteniall incompatible) binary versions
of XML. And what crazed person invented UDDI???
Are we marching in the wrong direction? Or is this just the normal
gravitational pull of commodity software and faster networks?
Come to the February 2005 NYJavaSIG meeting and listen to three speakers
give their views on the current state of web services for enterprise IT.
And bring your views! There will be an open discussion at the end of
the session.
