Specifically, does what newsreader client, which should be free and
open source, fulfill OP's requirement? My platform is Linux/GNOME.

I am pretty sure that any program that supports gnu/linux will do it.
I use thunderbird and it does it.

The feature you are looking for is called threads or threading. When
you turn on threads it will group all messages into a thread. When a
new message occurs for the thread it will bring that thread to the top
of the list.

The message will be at the end of that thread and you will see all
messages in the thread but that thread could be a month or two old and
go two the top of the list as their is a new entry in that thread.

I hope this makes some sense as it is somewhat hard to explain.

Cheers

With as innovative as Google is - I am surprised that they have not made
some kind of cross platform in browser client which would satisfy these
needs while still providing access to Google groups.

The OP obviously has no idea what newsgroups are or how they work.
In any case. I'm using google groups myself, and the newests posts DO
go to the top. I don't know about their new beta, but it is probably a
user-preference option.

Newest topic, or newest thread, goes to the top. Newest post doesn't. I
think that's the OP wants.

He just has them sorted the wrong way ;)
