struts/jsp/applet: sessionid doesn't work in applet for macs only

i have a web application in which the user logs on using a standard struts
form, is assigned a sessionid, and then goes to a page with an applet. on
windows and in linux, the applet is able to communicate with the server, and
the sessionid is preserved (i.e., posts made from inside the applet have the
same sessionid as normal html requests made by the browser, and so the
authenticated user is able to do the things authenticated users do). on the
macintosh, however, this doesn't work. although windows opened through
normal html links use the correct sessionid, the applet gets assigned a new
sessionid each time it communicates (and thus the user is not recognized as
having been authenticated).

does anyone have an idea as to how to fix this?
