XML serialization of structures

I am starting to write a serialization module
for structures using XML.

This will be along the lines of:

http://www.xml.com/lpt/a/1999/09/serialization/index.html

Questions:

1) Has anyone worked with this? (Or a similar project) ?

2) Is there any standard in this area? I would be glad if
the generated XML would be compatible with other compilers
or processors.

You mean a standard for XML ("well formedness", etc.)?
