Animated GIF won't work in IE 6.0

G

Gary Kaucher

At the top of the page on my website http://www.itemlook.com I have an
animated gif called "eyeline.gif". It has worked fine in the past, but
recently I am unable to get it to work using IE6. All that I get is a box
with nothing in it. It almost seems as if the file will not open on my page,
let alone animate.

It still works fine with my Netscape browser. I am using Windows 98. Any
ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary

Same here in IE6, Win2k.

Exactly - even when accessing the image directly it displays the empty
box.
Any
ideas would be appreciated.

FWIW, it works fine in IE5 and 5.5. My guess is that a recent Windows
update may have broken it - possibly the fix for the .wmf vulnerability
(though your image is a gif). Other than that I have no idea, sorry.

Works with me IE6 and Win2K

What version number? 6.0.2800.1106 here. When was the last time you
downloaded/installed Windows Updates?

Mark - Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Back on 12/14/05 I
installed Windows Update KB905915 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer 6. Looking back, it seems that the problem may have started after
that update was installed. I just solved the problem by going to Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel (Windows 98) and removing Internet Explorer
Q905915. After doing this, I accessed http://www.itemlook.com using Internet
Explorer 6.0, and eyeline.gif loaded and "animated" just like old times. Of
course, this won't help others that still have KB905915 installed. From what
I've read in the newsgroups, it looks like I need to save eyeline.gif in a
newer version of Photoshop in order to solve the problem for others. I think
I will wait to see if Microsoft comes out with any fixes for KB905915 first.

Thanks again,

Gary

No problem. I've come across similar issues in the past - one I remember
was a particular printer for one of our clients stopped printing
completely after a Windows Update was installed.

Same here! And downloaded and patched that damn WMF fix on..., what was
it last Thursday. Only us IE testing and (what it should be restricted
to IMHO) file management.

It looks like my problem was the result of Windows Update KB905915 that I
installed on 12/14/05. I also am running on IE 6.0.2800.1106, but operating
system is Windows 98. I removed the Internet Explorer Q905915 update from
Add/Remove Programs and eyeline.gif at http://www.itemlook.com works for me
once again. Did you happen to install KB905915 also, or is that not needed
in Win2K?

Thanks for input,
Gary

Yep - have that one installed. Wonder whether maybe Jonathan doesn't, if
it's working for him?

Yep, must have missed that one! I have patches before and aft, not sure
if I want to...even though OI really do not use IE on web.

It looks like there was something wrong with my animated gif. The logical
screen was too small for the images of the animation. I fixed the gif,
reinstalled it on http://www.itemlook.com, and reinstalled KB905915.
Everything seems to work fine now using Windows 98 and IE 6 and KB905915
installed. So it appears that there was nothing wrong with KB905915.

Working fine here too.

Probably just that it choked on the problem in the image where
previously it managed to work around it.
